News-in-Context: Indonesia – Radical Islamist Coup Plot

Recently the police in Indonesia raided houses and uncovered a plot to assassinate the President, attempt Mumbai-like attacks and install a radical Islamist government that included installing Sharia Law – their version of course.

I have put this item (“Indonesia militants planned sharia coup, assassinations”) in my blog to point out a number of things that are relevant to the theme I am following regarding the dangers of radicalism be it those radical Islamists in this article but also how others exploit the information and put it out of context to support their own ugly agendas.

JAKARTA (Reuters) – Indonesian militants captured in recent police raids were planning a series of attacks including a Mumbai-style hotel siege targeting foreigners and an assault on the president at an independence day ceremony, police said on Friday.

The men also planned to target U.S. President Barack Obama, who is scheduled to visit the country later this year, and plotted the attacks to install sharia law in the world’s most populous Muslim nation, officials said.

Police have arrested and killed several suspected jihadists during a series of raids across Indonesia since February when they discovered a militant training camp in the Sumatran province of Aceh.

National Police Chief Bambang Hendarso Danuri told reporters that an Aceh-based militant group had planned to attack President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, government officials, and state guests attending an independence day event in August, and would then declare Indonesia an Islamic state ruled by sharia law.

This item, be sure, will be viewed by the far-right in the west as another example of how ugly Muslims are and how Islam wishes to dominate the world.  The compelling evidence, they will say, is that this is yet again another example of violence by Islamists and thus Muslims.   The simple answer is, yes it is.  But then abuse of context is stating real existing facts or data but not all of it or in the right frame to support what the actual facts and intentions are.

What this event tells us is that yes there are dangerous, violent and militant Islamists that would love to conquer in the name of their ideological system and install their interpretations over the entire world.  That they are willing to kill to do it and force their views on others.      But this event also tells us that it failed, that the country which happens to be the largest Muslim populated country in the world has and continues to reject them.  Something the far-right hate-mongers never tell you – that would be contextual.

That is why I post this event – to point out yet again that one can almost say and imply anything by abusing context and it is almost always done for an agenda.  The reality is that there are 56 Muslim countries in the world and slightly more than half have rejected theologically controlled Sharia Legal Systems.  Of those that do have it, again the majority have only Sharia Family Legal systems which are still under supervision and appeal by a Secular Court.   Some countries, such as Malaysia have also some Sharia Courts that deal with specific needs, such as appeals and disputes over Islam-specific categories – like Halal licensing.

Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Malaysia

In today’s Malaysian News “The Star” there are easy to find examples of what is happening, in stark contrast to say what bigoted blogs produce in constant logic-smothering waves.   One item, “Court allows lawyer to challenge rule that KL Syarie lawyer must be Muslim” which is self explanatory.  A non-Muslim lawyer argues that it is unconstitutional (Secular) to discriminate against non-Muslims arguing cases in a Sharia (they spell it Syarie) Court.  It shows that there is both flexibility in the system, that the Constitution prevails, etc, etc.  A second item also from The Star “Syariah Court Status Will Be Raised” talks about how a Malaysian Minister has stated that one of the Sharia Courts will be increased in legal status to support increased case-loads in areas such as Halal compliance and status.   I point that one out to show that it requires a legal effort and serious consideration before giving power to more theocratic Sharia Courts and then it is again only for specific reasons.    I should be fair in pointing out that Sharia Judges in Malaysia are clerics with law degrees.  In some countries Sharia Judges are just imams with little or no legal training at all.

  1. Just to let you know. I am not going to allow your comment with the link back intact. From reading your blog it appears that you are doing the very same things that you accuse others of. Have I known decent and honest Muslims? Certainly, and to say otherwise would not be truthful. have I heard screaming Muslims yelling Allah Akbar as they were shooting at myself and others? More times than I have fingers, and that Sir, is a truth that is burned into my mind.

Now, on the plus side? Myself, as well as many others across the entire planet have asked more times than I could possibly cite; “Where are the so-called moderate Muslims condemning atrocities?” You Sir, are the very first example that I myself have seen. I just hope and pray that you don’t end up with your head on a stick, and I mean that in all serious.

    Peace be unto you Sir.

    Patrick,

My blog and efforts are pointing out radicalism in all its forms and I will be the first to agree with you in most respects to the above comments. Having said that, in fact, your comments have missed the point completely.

The attrocities exist, most certainly. By political or radical Muslims – they certainly do. That the bulk of the Muslim world appears not to be doing anything openly about it – yes, but to a degree.

At the same time there are other attrocities in the world and getting half the media and/or not as much condemnation is a point also worth making. Why is that?

That there is a community out there that are not targetting those radicals, Muslims or not and equally is the point, that they are willing to denounce, demonize and attack an entire community for the actions of the radicals and political militants is the point.

As for Muslims not doing anything, that is in fact incorrect. Even from my perspective, a Dutch national who travels to their countries, have muslim friends here and overseas and from my past representing a signficant muslim community in the city of Rotterdam I read, observe and take note. Since you say “were are the moderate Muslims?” I will answer that they are in fact on the tip of your nose but please take down the binoculars that you are using – because it shows close-up only those things that you want to see and nothing that is happening right there in front of you.

Examples, almost all of the 56 muslim countries are at war with the collective terrorist entities, perhaps some have mixed success and other issues to deal with – but if they were as you said – they would all be allowing, accepting and supporting – they do not. Thus the moderates are waging war on them.

The claim for Sharia Law by radicals falls on deaf ears and is ignored, both in the ballot box and at the points of power that is required for it to be the way they want – and they also reject it. Less than half of Muslim countries have Sharia legal systems, and of those less than half have a full-blown theocratically run Sharia legal system. Those others only a family court system that is subservient to a secular appeals court. You seem to have forgotten that, or simply lost in all the fear, anxiety or targetting, you missed it.

Take this article about Indonesia, the government has constantly put down islamist insurgencies, rejected sharia and as shown here, again squashed attempts. Is that not an example of the “moderates” doing their job.

I will agree that it is the moderate immigrant communities in the west that are to a degree sitting not standing up to the antics of the radicals and it that silence that is costing them dearly by making them the targets of the radicals, bigots and other agenda based interest groups. Some of them, will argue that they will not associate with them and they stay silent because simply put they are being targetted to often and some are scared and that the wider community is not supporting them or giving them a chance to speak out.

But then again that is not always the case as well, there is another group. There is in many countries, such as the UK, Germany and in my country a huge Muslim community that integrated very well. You do not know them, know about them and that is “because” they integrated so well. You see some of them, three of them are junior ministers in the government. It does not mean they are less pious, most avoid going to radical mosques they tell me, because they hate them just as much as you do. The media and the agenda groups and blogers do not know about them and thus assume they do not exist. Others, those that do, ignore them and thus it comes out of context or by saying “they are ex-muslims”. At the same time the radicals refuse to accept they exist as well to do the same thing.

Next time Patrick, I suggest you read my post instead of jumping to conclussions, you have assumed way to many things in your post that only tells us about yourself and not me or my posts. You will also see in my blog that I am not targetting anti-Islam, such as the item on Anjem Choudry, comments about the regime in Iran and so on. The bulk at present are on western anti-islam and self-proclaimed anti-jihadists for three very obvious reasons. One, they raise the accussations more on the net and thus get the bulk of the return, secondly I am from Rotterdam and I have to see this rubbish every day and I have enough respectable, well-integrated and patriotic Dutch friends and ex-constituents that I feel obliged to give them a helping hand and lastly the Wilders issue because if unchecked and not understood confuses the matter.

    Regards.
